Fuel Injection Retrofit Kits Clear the Air and Raise Income

Three billion people live in the developing world live in a mega-city, breathing air so polluted it causes an estimated three to six million deaths per year, as well as countless other chronic illnesses. Envirofit International, a Colorado-based nonprofit, seeks to reduce toxic emissions and environmental health problems while creating jobs and raising incomes in the developing world.

A primary source of outdoor air pollution is two-stroke engines, which power 100 million motorcycles, scooters, and three-wheeled "tuk-tuks" across Southeast Asia—creating over eleven times as much pollution as all the cars on earth. Envirofit developed a Direct In-cylinder (DI) fuel injection retrofit kit to make these engines cleaner and more fuel-efficient. With funding from the Lemelson Foundation, two-stroke motorcycle taxi engines in Vigan, Philippines will be retrofitted, eliminating enormous amounts of carbon dioxide emissions each year and infusing the local economy with upwards of a million dollars in fuel cost savings.

Envirofit offers more than just the technology; it provides taxi drivers with a micro-finance loan to cover the cost of the retrofit, which is then repaid within a year from the fuel savings. And the production, installation, and servicing of the engines creates 50 local jobs. Envirofit plans to expand its market penetration throughout the Philippines, where nearly two million two-stroke vehicles are in use, and to other countries in the developing world.
