Lighting the Way for Rural Development and Poverty Alleviation

Safe, efficient, low-cost energy technology can transform poor households, but even the best energy technologies can't have much effect unless there is a network of entrepreneurs and technicians to develop and serve the market.

The SELCO Solar Light Private Limited (SELCO India) is already an important provider of solar systems and cook stoves in southern India, with products that allow rural families to increase their household income while reducing the environmental and health risks of higher-cost kerosene lamps and inefficient stoves. With support from the Lemelson Foundation, SELCO's Incubation Center and Innovation Department develop new products and new business models to solve key problems for energy consumers. The Incubation and Innovation Departments also demonstrates the link between access to energy services and income generation in an effort to attract more financing for energy service delivery to the rural poor.
