Making Science and Technology Fun

Every kid knows that the best games are the ones that let you explore, tinker, imagine, create, collaborate, puzzle, and play. Now families and school groups are learning how those same activities have led to great inventions made by adults.

Invention at Play is an interactive and engaging exhibition that celebrates the creative processes at the heart of science and technology innovation—through inventors’ stories and activities that kids of all ages can enjoy. By showcasing the childhood toys and games that real-life inventors say inspired them, the exhibits give today's kids a powerful way to see how their own interests and skills can help them become successful innovators and inventors.

Winner of the Award of Excellence from the American Association of Museums, Invention at Play opened to the public at the Smithsonian's Lemelson Center in Washington, D.C., and has traveled to museums around the country. The opportunity to learn while playing doesn't end in the galleries, however. In addition to the exhibition and website, free educator guides offer examples of classroom activities that promote creative play, and free family guides detail inventive activities that kids and grown-ups can try together at home.
