Minority Introduction to Engineering, Entrepreneurship, and Science

MITE2S (Minority Introduction to Engineering, Entrepreneurship, and Science) is a rigorous six week residential summer program at MIT that introduces promising minority high school juniors to engineering, science, and entrepreneurship. The program also stresses the value and rewards of pursuing technical degrees and careers. The program is 100% scholarship-based. Funding from industry, foundations, and individuals covers all living and educational expenses for each admitted student. Students only pay for their transportation to and from MIT. The MITE2S program is open to high school students who are US citizens or permanent residents and who are from one of the minority groups underrepresented in the engineering and science fields, namely, Native American, Hispanic American, and African American.

By giving students a preview of the academic and social life commonly found on a university campus, MITE2S helps students to:

  • take better advantage of the curriculum available in their senior year of high school;
  • make a smoother transition from high school to college; and
  • gain insight into the career opportunities available in engineering and science.

In 2001, The Lemelson Foundation awarded MIT $1.6M to fully endow Lemelson Foundation MITE2S Scholarships. This substantive gift enables the MITE2S program to annually introduce approximately seven underrepresented minority high school seniors to participate in the six week residential summer program.
